DE NATA

Sharing some absolutely delicious Portuguese custard tarts that I baked over the weekend. Homemade puff pastry is filled with a lemon and cinnamon flavoured custard, pressed into specially shaped tins, and baked in a hot oven. These Portuguese pastries are now found all over the world and biting into one fresh out of the oven is pure bliss. The secret to a perfect pastel de nata is a crispy, laminated shell with a just-set wobbly custard centre.

Natas can be tricky to make but are definitely worth the effort! I originally learned to make them in Porto but I am delighted to have been able to perfect the technique to bake them at home. Looking forward to putting them on the class schedule soon.
